One of the most popular children and young peoples social media platforms WhatsApp have this month released it new ‘Disappearing Messages’ function leading to concerns for children and young peoples safety from exploitation, bullying and abuse.
The new function allows users to adjust the settings on their account to enable their messages to auto delete after seven days, similar to Snapchat and Facebook messaging.
Disappearing messages present a risk to children and young people in a number of ways. Particularly as they lead children and young people into a false sense of security whereby what they share appears to be more private than it actually is. They may think their messages will disappear, but recipients can still save them elsewhere.
For further information and guidance for those who work with children and young people to support and inform them how to keep safe online.
