Blind Cords Safety Campaign

Blind Cord Safety

The majority of parents and carers of children think about the potential risks posed to children in the home and ensure that action is taken to protect them from the risk of accidental injuries. You may, for example, use stair safety gates, plug covers and ensure your medicines and cleaning products are safely stored out of reach, but have you ever considered reducing the risk of strangulation from internal curtain or blind cords? Looped blind and window cords can be dangerous; they can strangle a child and have led to the tragic accidental deaths of young children in Staffordshire.

Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Safeguarding Children Boards have worked together to help raise awareness of the dangers of blind cords through a community wide communications campaign. We would ask that you take 5 minutes of your time to read the 'Information for Parents, Carers and Practitioners' guidance and the 'Blind Cord Campaign Leaflet' which can be viewed at the bottom of this page.

There is also a downloadable 'Blind Cord Campaign A3 Poster' available for practitioners to display within their organisations, to help raise awareness about blind cord safety.

Manufacturers and suppliers of blinds can also view specific advice on their responsibility towards promoting blind cord safety within Staffordshire and about how to ensure that they are compliant with health and safety legislation by viewing the 'Information for Businesses' document.

In addition there is also a copy of Staffordshire County Councils 'Health and Safety Guidance - The Safety of Window Blinds'that is available to view. It is hoped that this document can be used by large and small organisations or groups as an example of how to they can improve the safety of window or door blind cords to help ensure that their establishments become a safer place for children to access.
