Social Worker Wins National Award

A Staffordshire County Council Social Worker has won the prestigious 2008 Social Worker of the Year award, for 'outstanding work with young people in custody.'

Jacqui Knight, who works as a Safeguarding Social Worker at Brinsford Young Offender's Institute, was nominated for the national award by her Safeguarding Manager Helen Teden.  She attended the glittering ceremony in Bedford, where she was announced the overall winner and received her award.

Jacqui is employed by Staffordshire County Council, and works as a social worker primarily with young men, aged 15-18 in custody.  She ensures their needs are met, and promotes the welfare of young people in custody, as well as ensuring they are being kept safe and investigating any concerns.

County Councillor Peter Beresford said:  "It is testament to Jacqui's hard work and commitment that she has won this award.  She is a shining example of one of many social workers, doing excellent work with our young people across Staffordshire."

Jacqui said:   "I am honoured to be representing Staffordshire for the Social Worker of the Year 2008, and would to thank everyone for their continued support.  It is a great privilege and an honour to have my work recognised.

"My award is not only for myself, but for my counter parts at Werrrington YOI and across the country who have put so much resources in place.  The impact on the lives of these young people has been enormous."
